Hôtel des Granges > Tourism > The Alpilles
From Maillane, the birthplace of Frédéric Mistral, to the majestic site of Les Baux-de-Provence, from the waves of luminous rock to the countryside devoted to vines and olive groves, the Alpilles alone encapsulates all the magic and legends of inland Provence. In just a few kilometres, from Mouriès to Eygalières, from Fontvieille to Maussane, all the way to Saint-Rémy, "the capital", you'll find a succession of landscapes set in typical architecture, a timeless testimony to this bewitching land.
Here, an olive grove brightened by poppies; there, a pine wood dominated by a rocky ridge; further on, an eighteenth-century farmhouse or a village square shaded by hundred-year-old plane trees. Above, in the brilliant blue, swifts trace their arabesques. Mistral described it as a "belvedere of glory and legends", while Daudet made it the setting for his scented tales. Even today, the Alpilles seem to have stepped straight out of a Provençal cot, true to their soul and their history.
From village to village, from the Château of the medieval town of Les Baux-de-Provence to the Oppidum des Caisses de Jean-Jean, discover the must-see places and sites that are sure to make you fall in love with the Alpilles.
